Stay Current on Innovation in Learning

3.5.a: Stay Current on Innovation in Learning

Connected learners aim to stay updated on new technologies which enhance lesson delivery. These educators search for methods which advance academic excellence, by tapping into the cognitive, social and emotional development of our children.

Popular software such as Nearpod, Canvas and Quizizz, add vibrant interactivity to regular sessions in core areas of Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science. Here is an addition quiz aimed at ages 5-6 students (Infants A level). This was easily constructed on initial log in to the program.

Quizizz Product Summary and Rubric

Quizizz breaks up the monotony of regular pencil and paper assessment. It is an excellent tool for both teachers and pupils, especially in Reading, (PradnyaDewi and Kristiani, 2021). Research Article on Quizizz in Enhancing Reading

Reading is the basis of all other subjects. At our institution, Quizizz might help students become more confident readers. Through repetitive use, students may improve their vocabulary and language skills. Quizizz is student-centred, thereby facilitating independent learning and self-motivation. In completing an assessment, students would become more adept at asking questions, engaging in discussions, giving feedback to peers and delving deeper into the information given. Students would see their rank on leaderboards and check on their progress or repeat assessments to solidify concepts. Players in the first rank will be inspired to sustain their position, adding value to their self-esteem. The element of competitiveness through gamification, may possibly motivate those in the lower standings to achieve a higher rank.

Quizizz is user-friendly. Older students can create their own quizzes, add avatars and memes, to have fun while learning. Music can be enabled to decrease stress levels, by generating an exciting atmosphere to the classroom. Quick questions or exit tickets can capture their attention before leaving the quiz, to see what they have just learned.

Educators would benefit too! Teachers may swap quizzes with colleagues throughout the age group. Leaderboards from each class could be utilized to have a SWOT analysis, making bi-monthly meetings more productive. Discussions from the data could be employed to monitor how the students are progressing on selected topics. Recommendations would then inform the areas for end of term testing.

Additionally, Quizizz is able to permit teachers to negotiate inclusivity, for pupils with learning challenges. Adjusting features such as Dyslexia Font, Read Aloud, unlimited attempts and extra time, helps reduce student’ anxiety. It creates a successful lesson for all involved.

Connected learners can also stay current on innovation in learning by engaging in the use of Google Classroom, robotics programs, and augmented reality technologies.

The ability to stay current on technological advancements is seen in the use of the GSuite platform, utilized by Barbadian teachers at the primary level. Progressive use of the Google Classroom as a learning management system (LMS) at my institution, continues to sharpen my technological skills. Weekly homework assignments are posted referencing Liveworksheets, YouTube videos, and educational gaming links.

Google Classroom occasionally adds updates or new resources which advance student engagement. A recent addition to the Youtube video link was the ability to pause videos and add multiple choice or close-ended questions to build Comprehension skills. Another feature added was the creation of interactive worksheets. By clicking “Resources” on the left menu, teachers can also import questions from Google Forms to complete an assignment.

Augmented Reality with Profuturo 📱

Augmented Reality (AR) is technology which involves blending digital information with the physical world, via the use of a cell phone or Tablet. According to Fitria (2023), this immersive technology leads to increased memory retention and concretization of subject matter for students. It promotes independent learning by fostering an increase in confidence and curiosity about challenging subject matter. Subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, and History, are brought to life in an interactive way. ProFuturo LevelUp training. Training was piloted for educators to improve technological capacities in primary schools across Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Bahamas and St. Lucia in 2019 through the Organization of American States (OAS).

Impact at My School - Robotics technology💡

In practicing robotics, we see a culmination of various subjects across the curriculum. Students work cooperatively to gain problem solving skills by developing the 4Cs of 21st century learning: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Bloom's taxonomy also takes root where higher order thinking skills of analysis and evaluating remain prominent.

Studies show that the application of robotics programs herald an improvement in general learning, Sharif (2023). Technology programs can instill confidence in shy or less verbose students by boosting collaborative learning and reducing reclusiveness. Robotics provides interactive learning within a socially relaxed atmosphere, where students "learn by doing." Sharif (2023) further cites constructivists' theories by John Dewey, Vygotsky and Piaget, as educational realities which support the foundation of robotics programs.

  1. Carol I love the ideas you have shared in your blog and the examples given.

The use of tools like Google Classroom, robotics programs and augmented reality is a great way to integrate innovation into the classroom and create engaging learning experiences. It is impressive that at your institution, Google Classroom is also being used effectively as a learning management system to support ongoing learning. Incorporating resources like Liveworksheets, YouTube videos, and educational games not only strengthens your technological proficiency but also provides students with diverse, interactive ways to learn. This proactive approach is a great example of how educators can continue evolving and stay ahead of the curve.

I love that you shared information on Coding and Robotics in your examples and I found the information quite refreshing.

    Keep up the great work!
