 3.5.c: Engage in Reflective Practice

Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988) is one model of reflective practice which has six stages of development for teachers. Effective educators should apply these steps to their journalling, as a way of building emotional intelligence and self-awareness:

  • Stage 1: Describe what happened
  • Stage 2: Give the thoughts/feelings/emotions you were having during the incident
  • Stage 3: Evaluate what you did and what others did - weigh the pros and cons
  • Stage 4: Do an analysis using prior knowledge to make sense of what happened
  • Stage 5Conclude what approach may have worked for a better outcome
  • Stage 6: Plan for the future
